One Day Bath Remodel: What You Get in a Day, and What You Don't

One Day Bath Remodel: What You Get in a Day, and What You Don't
Quick answer
  • A one day bath remodel is almost always an acrylic liner and wall system installed over your existing tub and walls
  • Published 2026 cost guides put Bath Fitter, the best-known brand, at roughly $3,000 to $7,500
  • It's a good fit when the tub, walls, and plumbing behind them are solid and the problem is how the bathroom looks
  • It's the wrong fit when the walls are soft, the valve leaks, or you want to change the layout
  • The one day is install day. Measuring, ordering, and fabrication happen before it.

You’ve seen the ads. New bathroom, one day, no mess.

Here’s the part the ad doesn’t spell out. What gets done in that one day is a different job than a bathroom remodel. It’s a cover, not a tearout, and whether that’s a smart move depends on what’s behind your walls.

I’ve built and remodeled bathrooms for over 20 years, and I’m not here to trash the one-day companies. For the right bathroom, they’re a fair deal. For the wrong one, they’re a nice-looking lid on a problem that keeps getting worse.

What Actually Happens in a One Day Bath Remodel

The one-day companies sell a system, not a custom build. Bath Fitter, Re-Bath, Jacuzzi Bath Remodel, and West Shore Home are some of the names you’ll run into, and they don’t all sell the same thing. Bath Fitter’s own site describes its product as acrylic liners and walls “installed right over existing tiling in just one day.”

The process usually looks something like this:

1
The in-home consultation

A rep comes out, measures the tub and walls, walks you through colors and accessories, and gives you a price. Bath Fitter offers its version as a free in-home consultation.

2
Ordering and fabrication

The liner and wall panels get made or cut to fit your tub and your wall dimensions. This is the part that happens off the clock you see in the ads.

3
Install day

The crew preps the old surfaces, sets the tub liner over your existing tub, adheres wall panels over the old walls, and puts on new trim, and sometimes a new faucet or shower head.

Notice what’s missing from that list. No demo, no new waterproofing, no plumbing moved, no inspection of the framing. That’s exactly why it can happen in a day.

What It Costs Next to Tile and a Full Remodel

$3,000 - $7,500
Typical Bath Fitter job in published 2026 cost guides (HomeGuide). Bath Fitter itself only quotes after an in-home visit.

That number surprises a lot of people. They expect “one day” to mean “a few hundred bucks,” and it doesn’t. You’re paying for a custom-fit product, a trained crew, and a warranty, not for the hours on site.

Here’s how it stacks up against the other ways to fix a tired tub area:

OptionWhat HappensTimeRough Cost
One-day liner systemAcrylic tub liner and wall panels over what's thereAbout 1 day on site$3,000 - $7,500
Tile tub surroundOld walls out, new backer and waterproofing, new tileSeveral days$3,500 - $9,000+
Basic full bathroom remodelNew fixtures, tile, vanity, paint, layout staysWeeks$8,000 - $15,000

The tile and full-remodel ranges come from my own posts on bathtub walls and what a bathroom remodel really costs. Your region will move all three rows. The gap between the first two rows is smaller than most people expect, and that’s the part worth sitting with before you sign anything.

Good, Fast, or Cheap

I say this to clients all the time. Good, fast, or cheap. You can pick two.

A one-day system is fast, and it’s cheaper than a gut remodel. What you give up is the chance to see and fix what’s behind the wall. If what’s behind the wall is fine, you didn’t really give up anything.

Some bathrooms where I think a liner system makes real sense:

  • A rental or a house you’re selling soon. You want it clean and presentable, and you aren’t planning to live with it for twenty years.
  • Solid walls with ugly tile. The tile is dated or the grout is stained, but nothing is loose, soft, or cracked.
  • You only have one bathroom. Remember, you’re living in the house during a remodel. Going without your only shower for a week or more is a real cost, and a one-day install avoids it.
  • A tub that’s sound but worn. Scratched or faded finish, no cracks, no flex when you stand in it.
A liner is a cover. Covers are great when the thing underneath is healthy.

When I’d Walk Away From a Liner

Hidden work will get you. That’s one of the first things I learned in this trade, and bathrooms are where it shows up most. Where I work in the Pacific Northwest, water damage behind tub walls is everywhere, especially in older homes.

Do the push test first

Press hard on the wall tile near the faucet and down low in the corners. If anything feels soft, moves, or sounds hollow, water has probably gotten behind it. Gluing panels over that wall hides the problem while it keeps getting worse. Tear it out, fix the framing, and start clean.

I’d skip the one-day route and get a real remodel bid in any of these cases:

  • Soft or bulging walls. That’s usually wet drywall or rot, and no panel fixes it.
  • A dripping or leaking valve. If the plumbing inside the wall needs work, the wall has to open anyway.
  • A cracked tub or a floor that flexes. A liner rides on whatever is under it.
  • You want a different layout. Moving the drain, going from tub to walk-in shower with a new footprint, or adding a niche means real construction. My tub to shower conversion post covers what that job involves.
  • You want to pick your own tile. Liner systems come in a set menu of colors and patterns, which is part of how they keep the price where it is.

My standard is simple. If this was my mom’s bathroom, would I cover it or open it? If I’d want to see behind the wall, so should you.

Questions to Ask Before You Sign

Whether you go with a one-day company or a local remodeler, the rules for comparing bids don’t change. Make sure you’re comparing the same scope, and get it all in writing.

  • What exactly is going over the old surface, and what's being removed?
  • What happens if the crew finds soft walls or damage on install day? Is there a price for that in writing?
  • What does the warranty cover? Bath Fitter's covers its acrylic products for life against manufacturing defects, which is the product, not the wall behind it.
  • Is the faucet and valve being replaced, or just the trim?
  • Is a permit needed for any part of this in your city?
  • Can I get a remodel bid for the same bathroom so I can compare?

That last one matters most. The cheapest bid usually leaves something out, and a one-day quote and a tile quote are two different scopes. Line them up side by side before you decide which one is the deal.

See Both Versions Before You Decide

Most homeowners can’t picture the finished bathroom, and I don’t blame them. A brochure of acrylic panel colors doesn’t tell you much about how it’ll look in your room with your vanity and your light.

Before Almond tile with stained grout, a worn tub, chrome trim that's seen better days.
After Clean white walls, matte black fixtures, a fresh tub, and the same footprint.

That’s the gap I built ReVision AI for. Take a photo of your bathroom as it is today and see it in a new style in seconds. Try a clean modern look, then a tile-heavy one, and see which one you’d actually want to live with. Browse the gallery for real before-and-afters, or look through the design styles first.

If the tile version is the one that sticks, you’ll know a liner won’t get you there. If the simple look wins, a one-day system might be all you need. Either way, you walk into the consultation knowing what you want. Download ReVision AI and try 3 free transformations.

For the bigger picture on planning a bathroom job, my bathroom remodel guide walks through the full process, and bathroom remodel AI covers how visualization fits into it.

Your Next Steps

  1. Do the push test on every wall around the tub, and check the tub floor for flex or cracks.
  2. Decide what’s bugging you: the look, or something failing. Looks can be covered. Failures need to be fixed.
  3. Snap a photo and try a few styles in ReVision AI so you know whether you want panels or tile.
  4. Get one quote from a one-day company and one from a local remodeler, for the same scope.
  5. Ask each one, in writing, what happens if they find damage.
  6. Pick the one that fixes your actual problem, not just the one that finishes fastest.
